Raccoons are generally seen as pests. Known as 'bandits' for their mask like markings, they scavenge for food at night, being recognized in the morning by the mess they've left behind. As cute as these bandits may be, raccoons are seen as threatening. Raccoons can carry a particular strain of rabies, and like all strains, rabies can be passed on to humans by an infected animal. If left untreated, the disease can result in death. Similar to mental health, raccoons carry a perception of danger. Although the danger of rabies can be justified in raccoons, they don't all have rabies. Like the raccoon, not everyone with a psychiatric disorder is a threat to society.
