Analogy: Numbing the Pain, Numbs the Pleasure

I thought of a great analogy the other day as I was getting my teeth cleaned. Anyone who’s had a cavity has hopefully had the experience of their mouth being numbed when the dentist works on removing the cavity. It’s a good thing to have done so one doesn’t feel pain during the procedure. However, after the treatment is over, if the area is still numb and someone you love or desire goes to kiss you, you won’t be able to feel the kiss. When we numb the pain, we also numb our ability to experience pleasure.
